Toward a Constructive and Comparative Theology of Krishna Bhakti for Contemporary Bengal Vaishnavism
Abstract
Schweig provides a comparative theological framework for understanding A. C. Bhaktivedānta Swami Prabhupāda’s contributions to the articulation of Krishna bhakti. Emphasizing the concepts of prema (divine love), rasa (aesthetic flavor), and bhakti (devotion), the essay situates ISKCON as a continuation and transformation of Bengali Vaishnava heritage. It explores how Prabhupāda’s theological translation—across cultures, languages, and institutions—retains the metaphysical sweetness and personalism of the Gaudīya tradition.
