Abstract

This article by Dennis Hudson explores the life, poetry, and theological significance of Andal (also known as Goda), a prominent Sri Vaishnava Alwar saint from 9th century South India. It delves into her unique devotion to Krishna, characterized by intense feminine passion and longing for him as a lover. The author examines her two major poetic works, Tiruppavai and Nachiyar Tirumoli, as expressions of this desire and as liturgical tools for devotees to engage in a similar "viraha-bhakti" (devotion in separation).
