Abstract

David L. Haberman examines how the erotic Krishna-Gopal of Braj has been systematically marginalized by outsiders—missionaries, Orientalists, and Hindu reformers—who favored a moral, warrior-like Krishna of the Bhagavad-Gita. The paper reveals how this erasure, often driven by colonial and reformist agendas, framed Braj Krishna devotion as a betrayal of true religion.
