This text recounts a deeply philosophical dialogue with His Holiness B.R. Sridhara Maharaja, exploring the Gaudiya Vaisnava understanding of the Holy Name (Hare Kṛṣṇa maha-mantra) as a transcendental sound (adhoksaja) that lies beyond material perception. According to the Maharaja, the Name does not originate from the material tongue or ear, but descends from the spiritual plane, penetrating the layers of mind and intellect before vibrating the soul. The awakened soul then inspires the body to chant the Holy Name. The discussion reflects on the five transformative effects of śrī-kṛṣṇa-saṅkīrtana as articulated by Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu—cleansing the heart (ceto-darpaṇa-mārjanam), extinguishing the fire of material suffering (bhava-mahā-dāvāgni-nirvāpaṇam), bestowing auspiciousness (śreyaḥ-kairava-candrikā-vitaraṇam), nourishing spiritual life (vidyā-vadhū-jīvanam), and offering ever-expanding bliss (ānandāmbudhi-vardhanam), culminating in the total purification of the self (sarvātma-snapanam). The text also examines the cosmic and personal potency of sound, the risks of impure or material sound vibrations, and the necessity of guidance from a pure devotee (śuddha bhakta or gurudeva) for the genuine experience of the Holy Name and the awakening of rasa—the deep spiritual emotions toward Kṛṣṇa.
